Let's take this statement as an example...
I am feeling ___________ about being crystal clear because I know about and have access to resources to help me create the best education experience for my child.
If you are a 1, it might sound like this:
I am not really concerned about my child...or I am not concerned yet. I know my child learns a bit differently and I have been paying attention. I just filled out this survey to make sure I wasn't missing anything, because I want to make sure my child has a great educational experience.
If you are a 2, it might sound like this: I am starting to get a little concerned because the schoolwork is definitely presenting some challenges. My child
assures me, though, that everything is okay so I'm going to cross my fingers and keep checking in to make sure.
If you are a 3, it might sound like this:
Now I am starting to get more anxious and even scared because there are problems with grades, motivation, behavior, and the like. Not enough to be called by the teacher, so I don't know if my child is struggling, just isn't trying, or not working hard enough. I am getting nowhere fast trying to talk to my child about it. I don't know what to do.
If you are a 4, it might sound like this:
My child has struggled in school forever and I have done everything I can! She/he has a support plan at school but the grades are still not great and the test scores are worse. I've tried tutors and therapists, even taken her/him to doctors. Now, we're really in trouble and I am so frustrated. I don't know what to do for my child and I am becoming really afraid for her/his future.
If you are a 5, it might sound like this:
I am at my wit's end! I don't know what else to do to get my child the support and services he/she needs. It feels like every door I knock on closes. Everything I try to do, fails. I am so overwhelmed with everything else I have to do. I need help.
A few more things to consider before you do the Self-EVAL...
- Think about how You feel right now about each statement. Keep in mind that your rating will bring to your awareness
- What you need in order to successfully help your child have their best education experience.
- Realize each parent has a different perspective based on their child's current educational situation: learning different vs. learning disabled vs. special needs; grade level, amount of support, etc.
- Circumstances may yield different ratings at the time of taking this survey. For example, a step-parent might rate statements differently than a parent. A student might be doing well in school until circumstances change (the pandemic, a family crisis, or a sudden onset or increase in symptoms of a disability).
- Rate the statements honestly so you can see if you will benefit by stepping up and into your empowerment now.
